Excuse me... I was here first! Sparrows at my feeder... December, 2010

TAG
It's kind of sad that the sparrows have mostly driven away the other birds that used to visit my feeders... and this morning, this feeder was the only one with any seed left in it before I went out to refill all of them. There were at least 30 sparrows sitting in a neighbor's rose bush and taking turns at the feeder... some were more polite than others but mostly it was a feeding frenzy!

I know this isn't the best in terms of sharpness of the image... in addition to the motion of the feeder due to the sparrows fighting over perches, there was a fairly stiff breeze blowing things around.

I'll be mostly off-line for a few days but will visit soon. I'm enjoying comments and promise to return your visits soon if I haven't already!

  1. I think this is a great photo. So much action. I read a while ago that bird seed mixes with millet tend to attract sparrows...and I would get a lot of them when I fed a mix like the one in the picture. When I switched to just feeding sunflower seeds (in the shell) and thistle seeds (in separate feeders), I get few sparrows and lots of the other song birds like chickadees, nuthatches, finches, waxwings, and cardinals. It might be worth a try for you.

  2. A lot of fight and fury...or flight and flurry, whichever, Victoria. I love it.

  3. If it wasn't for the birds that come to my feeders, I'm not sure I could handle these Connecticut winters much longer. I get tons of sparrows too, but every now and then I get a really unusual one and so I try to pay more attention to their markings, etc. This year I've been putting out more suet cakes and I've had all kinds of woodpeckers stopping by--downy, red-bellied, hairy, etc. Amazing how fast they find the stuff!!! Also, in my tray feeder I've been giving the birds these little suet balls that I found at Lowe's and the birds (especially the blue jays) love them.

Oh, by the way, nice feeder photo! I think that the double-pane glass of my picture window will destroy the sharpness to much so I don't bother. But today I saw a cool remote control, with a video panel so you can see what the camera is seeing...and I may have to put that on my lust list soon :) jeff
